published 2026-11-02 by Rolf

Romania has no player in the Premier League at the start of the 2026/27 season, but the country's history in the competition includes memorable names and notable achievements, from Dan Petrescu's record-setting career to the recent arrival of Radu Drăgușin.

Premier League Stars From Romania

Although Romania has no player in the Premier League at the start of the 2026/27 season, the country’s history in the competition includes memorable names and notable achievements. Here are some of the Romanian stars who have featured in England’s top flight according to pariurisport.com.

Dan Petrescu: Romania’s Premier League benchmark

Dan Petrescu is widely regarded as one of the most successful Romanian players in Premier League history. The right-back played for Sheffield Wednesday, Chelsea, Bradford City and Southampton, making 215 Premier League appearances and scoring 23 goals.

His strongest spell came at Chelsea, where he became a familiar figure during the club’s rise in the late 1990s. Petrescu’s attacking contribution from defence made him stand out, and his appearance and goal totals remain a benchmark for Romanian players in the competition. The Premier League’s own historical profile identifies him as the Romanian with the most successful league career.

Adrian Mutu: A talented forward at Chelsea

Adrian Mutu arrived at Chelsea in 2003 with a reputation of a gifted attacking player. He scored six Premier League goals in 27 appearances for the London club.

Mutu’s time in England was brief, but his technical ability and attacking instincts made him one of the most recognisable Romanian footballers of his generation. His Premier League record places him among the Romanian players who made a notable impact in the competition.

Ilie Dumitrescu: Part of the early Romanian wave

Ilie Dumitrescu was among the first Romanian players to appear in the Premier League, joining Tottenham Hotspur in 1994. He later played for West Ham United.

Dumitrescu scored four Premier League goals and helped introduce Romanian football talent to English audiences during the league’s early years. His arrival coincided with that of Dan Petrescu, as both players made their Premier League debuts in the same memorable Sheffield Wednesday–Tottenham match in August 1994.

Gheorghe Popescu: A defender with attacking returns

Gheorghe Popescu spent the 1994/95 season at Tottenham Hotspur. The Romanian defender made 23 Premier League appearances and scored three goals.

Popescu was known for his leadership and composure, qualities that also defined his wider career in European football. His single season in England was short, but his contribution remains part of the story of Romania’s early Premier League representatives.

Radu Drăgușin: The recent Romanian representative

Radu Drăgușin became a recent Romanian presence in the Premier League after joining Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024. The centre-back made league appearances for Spurs, adding a new chapter to the country’s history in England.

His Premier League spell was interrupted by a serious knee injury in January 2025. According to a report published in August 2026, Tottenham loaned Drăgușin to Fiorentina for the 2026/27 season, meaning he would not be part of the Premier League that campaign.

Other Romanian players to remember

Several other Romanian footballers have featured in the Premier League, including Costel Pantilimon, Gabriel Tamaș, Florin Andone, Ionel Ganea, Răzvan Raț, Florin Răducioiu, Viorel Moldovan and Cosmin Contra.

Their experiences varied—from regular appearances to shorter spells—but together they form a significant part of Romania’s football connection with England. The Premier League’s historical list of Romanian players records 14 Romanians as having appeared in the competition as of its 2018 feature; later appearances, including Drăgușin’s, have added to that history.

Romanian representation may be absent from the 2026/27 Premier League at its outset, but the achievements of these players remain part of the competition’s history.
