What Is the FPL League Cup and How Do You Play?

Your players are picked, your bench is set, your budget is under control. The Premier League has kicked off, and the points have been rolling in. Already, you’ve managed to bag the bragging rights in your mini league, while maintaining a healthy position in the FPL Global table. But aiming for a league-topping season is only part of FPL’s appeal. Did you know there’s also the head-to-head FPL League Cup to play for?

First introduced in the 2021/2022 season, the cup competition allows private mini-league administrators to activate an automated knockout tournament exclusively for their players. Unlike the site-wide cup, which started running over a decade ago, the FPL League Cup allows friends to go up directly against each other.

How Does the FPL League Cup Work?

Each gameweek, private mini-league players go head-to-head. The team with the most points during that week’s matches progresses to the next round. The loser is knocked out. The tournament continues throughout the season with the final played in gameweek 38.

When the FPL League Cup begins depends on how many people are in the league. For example, a 16-team mini-league would require four rounds and start on gameweek 35. Where leagues don’t have a number that can be divided into a standard tournament bracket size, top-performing managers get a bye through to the next round.

When the cup draw is made, teams are randomly pitted against each other. This is done automatically on the FPL platform using CSPRNG technology to ensure fairness. Similar random number generators are used to generate single-use passwords for banking apps and to reveal symbols in casino games like those found in slots promotion campaigns such as House of the Dragon.

League managers set up the cup competition with just a few clicks. Once logged into your FPL account, go to the Leagues and Cups section and select your private classic league. Access admin settings by clicking Options and then Administer. Next, check the box to Create League Cup. Click Update League to confirm. Once this is all done, the FPL platform handles everything from here, including scheduling and automated match updates.

What Makes the Cup Competition Different?

Aside from being a one-on-one tournament in which the losing player is knocked out, the FPL League Cup differs from league gameplay in a few other ways. For instance, players need to manage squad transfers wisely as every extra transfer made beyond the free allocation incurs a four-point penalty, which is directly deducted from your total cup score for that gameweek.

If teams finish deadlocked after transfer hits are calculated, the platform takes into consideration specific tie-breaking factors. First, a tie will be decided on the most goals scored by the player’s active squad. If that doesn’t decide a winner, it comes down to who conceded the fewest goals. Finally, an automated CSPRNG-powered coin toss will randomly determine the winner and the loser.

Additionally, because knockout rounds are decided over a single week rather than an entire season, long-term planning needs to be reconsidered for short-term gains. It might mean a calculated risk with a bench player, a change of captain, or a different formation in reaction to the week’s Premier League matchups.

The Head-to-Head Battle in FPL

For some it’s about the thrill of personal rivalry. For others, it’s the chase for the title. Crucially, what the FPL League Cup brings with its knockout tension is an extra layer of excitement to fantasy football.
